What determines composition is the purpose - THE INTENT.
TREES IN MONO
Abstract composition, if we can call this photo, tends to be rigorous in its organization, with an emphasis on exluding clues to realism(shadowplay). Patterns respond to abstraction as the shadow here is evident. This can also be chiaroscuro(a monochrome picture made by using several different shades of the same color-wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn). The high contrast sunlight and shadow element create an interlocking composition on several levels.
This is too much "backyard rubbish" - inside joke.
Enough of the technicalities.
Among the other shots of Nik. This one is definitely my favorite.
